Windows Hello is a new way to sign in to your devices, apps, online services, and networks. It is more secure than using a password, because it uses biometric authentication—you sign in with your face, iris, or fingerprint.

Windows 11 as well as an Infrared Webcam is required for facial recognition to work. Not all LPSO machines currently have an IR webcam thus setup is limited at the moment.

On devices where an IR webcam is available, the below steps will assist with setup.

  • On the search bar, type Settings and open the Settings applet.
  • When Settings opens, browse to the Accounts entry.
  • Within Accounts, select Sign-in options.
  • If your device is capable of Facial recognition, under the option for Facial recognition, it'll display "Sign in with your camera (Recommended)"
  • Click Facial recognition then the Set up button.
  • On the Windows Hello setup window that appears, click Get Started.
  • A webcam screen will then appear showing your face. It is best to stare directly at the screen with no other person within view (or moving objects) to ensure it is able to capture your face properly.
    • NOTE - You may keep eyeglasses on as it is smart enough to recognize you with and without them on.
  • Once it is able to capture your face properly, you will then need to setup a PIN. click Set up PIN.
  • Enter your NewNet password.
  • Setup your PIN.
    • PIN Requirements are as follows...
      • Must be at least 6 characters long
      • Can't be longer than 127 characters
      • May include uppercase letters
      • May include lowercase letters
      • May include digits
      • May include special characters
      • Can't be a number pattern (such as 123456 or 111111)
        • It would not be recommended to make the PIN the same as your NewNet password as this will ultimately change and could cause confusion later.
  • Once your PIN has been setup, you're all done! Test it out by locking the machine and monitoring if it is able to unlock / login with little to no intervention involved.

Troubleshooting Steps...

If you find that facial recognition is not working as well as you'd like, you may need to have the system rescan your face once again. To do so...

  • On the search bar, type Settings and open the Settings applet.
  • When Settings opens, browse to the Accounts entry.
  • Within Accounts, select Sign-in options.
  • Expand Facial recognition (Windows Hello).
  • Click the Improve recognition button.
  • Click the Get Started button.
  • Enter your PIN.
  • The webcam interface will then reappear to allow your face to be rescanned.
  • Hopefully this helps make it a bit more reliable for you.
