General steps for setting up Multi-Factor Authentication.

- These instructions are generalized and may vary step by step.

- These instructions use the Microsoft Authenticator app as an example.


  • Requirements:
    1. A computer with internet access.
    2. A smartphone with ability to install apps from an app store.
      1. Authenticator App




  1. Open a web browser on a computer and go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com.


  2. To simplify the process, click on "Sign-in options " at the bottom.


  3. Click on "Sign in to an organization ".


  4. Enter "lafayettesheriff.com " for the domain name, then click the "Next " button.


  5. Enter your username as <username>@lafayettesheriff.com and click on the "Next " button.
  6. Enter your network password and then click the "Sign in " button.


  7. Click on the "Next " button.


  8. You can use the QR code shortcuts on a smartphone to download the Microsoft Authenticator app for your device.


  9. If prompted by the authenticator app, allow notifications. Then add an account and select "Work or School".
  10. Once you have downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app, click the "Next" button on the computer.
  11. In the Microsoft Authenticator app, select "Scan QR code". If prompted, allow the app permission to access the device's camera.


  12. Click the "Next" button on the computer.
  13. Using the smartphone, scan the QR code displayed on the computer. Then click on the "Next" button on the computer.


  14. A random code will be displayed on the computer. Use the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone to verify the code.


  15. Click on the "Next" button.


  16. Click on the "Done" button to complete the setup.
